The 7th album by The Puddle is George D. Henderson’s response to 30 years of under-appreciation for their urgent psychedelia, sweet pop sentiments and garage rock undertones. Secret Holiday/ Victory Blues burns with a quiet fury.
With their 1986-93 Flying Nun Records catalogue long out of print and a decade lost in the mist The Puddle have been making up for lost time in spectacular fashion with now 4 acclaimed albums on Fishrider Records since 2007.
“...articulate, challenging pop tunes... one of The Puddle’s finest efforts.” Otago Daily Times
“a tribute to an artist’s spirit to soldier on in the face of adversity – and complete their mission. More!” The Big Takeover
"Hugely reminiscent of Vic Godard, these songs could easily be from some long-lost Subway Sect album. And if that doesn’t make you want to investigate then frankly I fear for your sanity and your soul."
    Alistair Fitchett, www.unpopular-culture.com

about

"Secret Holiday" and "Victory Blues" are two 5-song EPs recorded in separate sessions at the Auckland Warehouse Studio of the legendary Bob Frisbee (Shaft, Street Chant, Transistors etc.). Rather than release two EPs, The Puddle have decided to combine them as one album, with each EP taking up one side of the vinyl LP edition.

out of print, The Puddle finally re-emerged in 2006 with 4 acclaimed albums released on Fishrider Records.

Track Name: Decline to Fall
Decline to Fall

Never let them tell you that
It's later than you think
Pick up the final straw
To use it in your drink
And in some country where
It's always party time
Slow decline
Sip your stiff red wine

No-one who knows you
Could ever expose you like we do
We can't help it
You're a party to this too

You're sinking faster than
A leaking submarine
Still telling tales of all
You should have done and might have been
There but for the grace of God
I'd follow you some more
Good angels stopped me
That's what I pay them for

No-one who knows you
Could ever expose you like we do
We can't help it
You're a party to this too

Never let them tell you that
It's later than you think
You take the final straw
And drop it in your drink
And in some country where
It's always party time
Sad decline
You'll sip the stiff red wine

No-one who knows you
Could ever expose you like we do
We can't help it
You're a party to this too
Track Name: Secret Holiday
Secret Holiday

Let's take a secret holiday
Sleeping in the leaves along the way
Tell the world to go away
Until we get there

They never let us take a break
We must atone for each mistake
But sometimes the chains just break
We see we gotta be free!
(free as a bee)

We should take a secret holiday
Butterflies are floating in the bay
Where the pale horizons sway
Until we get there

They never let us take a break
We must atone for their mistake
But then sometimes the chains just break
And we see we gotta be free
Track Name: The Vitalist
The Vitalist

Oh I suppose the stuff flew up your nose
Leaving you perfectly blameless
Everyone knows that now you're wearing clothes
Who saw you before you were famous

Entropy roars while life still explores
and builds up new creatures in changes
As from the tall, so with the small
more of an instinct than aimless

The Vitalist preens, you've come from his dreams
telling him sleep will be painless
But he'll sleep no more, not even a snore
now that he knows what the game is

I'll come to the point and light up this joint:
let all of God's creatures be shameless.
Track Name: Hydrogen 6
Hydrogen 6

When the stars are in the right place
and the Moon is at the start
When the tides pull you gently
to and from the dark
Then the Sun will soon be rising in the park
And the sky is just a magnet
the sky is still a magnet
the sky is but a magnet
For your heart
Track Name: Tender Validation
Tender Validation

I have not been brought up
in these matters of the heart
I am still uneducated
Still I know where I can start
to work you out and win your heart

I just put my foot into it
if I step one step near you
so I will put my feelings in a song
and I'll sing it all night long
Until you come along to stop me

I mean not to be critical
of love that I get given
But I still find the happiness I seek
Just dancing cheek to cheek
with you your step's unique
you're not a freak

Lay your weary head upon me
I will be your pillow
Tell me everything you think you know
You see I love you so
now close your eyes and just let go
Track Name: Victory
Victory

Art is the harshest mistress
Art is a cry of distress
wonderfully expressed
Who needs the rest?
A mirror crossing a busy road
with a headful of ideas
He pioneers

She is a golden omen
You could not find a woman
who's more in tune
with the Moon
Underneath her laughing eyes
let a hundred flowers bloom
In her room

Her kisses taste like Victory
Her kisses taste like Victory
Her kisses taste like Victory
over Death
Track Name: Oh Hayley (You're Right)
Oh Hayley (You're Right)

Well you're always on time
and you always call the shots
Oh Hayley you're mine
but you still get me tied up in knots
Oh Hayley you're fine
and that's one thing I never forgot
and all of this time
Your love's been keeping me hot

Just like Napoleon
your sense of smell is sharp
Just like Napoleon
inspiring works of art
Just like Napoleon
5'2" and dark
and just like the battle of Borodino
you're no walk in the park

Oh Hayley
You're right
Oh Hayley
You're right
Track Name: Little Red Coat
Little Red Coat

Put on your little red coat
and come out with me tonight
our love is all she wrote
they said to hold me tight
the Weasel and the Stoat
will not forget to bite
but you are at my throat
and we'll make it through alright

Take off your little red coat
and lie with me tonight
unwrap your five pound note
Honey come inside
the Weasel and the Stoat
will not forget to bite
but I am at your throat
we'll make it through alright

Put on your little red coat
and come out with me tonight
our love is all she wrote
they said to treat me right
the Weasel and the Stoat
are not afraid to bite
but you are at my throat
so we will make it through alright
Track Name: Walrus Arabia
This is an instrumental. There are no lyrics. Only the words that randomly pop into your head when you hear it.
